Student Story – Yasin Mohammed Hasen

Student Story – Yasin Mohammed Hasen

I am Mr. Yasin Mohammed Hasen from Ethiopia, with over seven years of experience in seasonal climate prediction, climate and crop modeling, and climate change research at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research. I hold a BSc in Meteorology and Hydrology from Arba Minch University and an MSc in Climate-Smart Agriculture from Haramaya University.

In 2024, I applied for the CaReFoAfrica Scholarship to pursue a PhD at the University of the Free State (UFS) in South Africa. I am honored and excited to have received this prestigious scholarship, enabling me to join the PhD program in Agrometeorology at UFS under the CaReFoAfrica project.

My research will focus on evaluating reanalysis datasets to study meteorological drought, developing probabilistic frameworks to quantify climate-related agricultural risks during different ENSO phases, and assessing soil fertility management as an adaptation strategy in Ethiopia.

Since arriving at UFS in February 2025, I’ve felt truly welcomed. Prof. Linus Franke has been incredibly supportive, offering guidance and introducing me to the campus community. The warmth and hospitality I’ve received from faculty, staff, and fellow students have made settling in easy, creating an enriching academic environment.

I am deeply grateful to the CaReFoAfrica Scholarship Committee for this opportunity, which will allow me to develop my expertise and build valuable professional networks. I also appreciate the mentorship of Prof. Franke and Dr. Stephan Steyn, as well as the support from Sally Visagie, Letlela Tshabalala, and the Department of Soil, Crop, and Climate Sciences for their assistance throughout the visa and admission processes.

This is just the beginning of my journey, and I’m excited to make the most of this incredible opportunity. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible!
